How do I start freelancing as a designer in Pakistan?

Upwork, Fiverr, or direct clients: what each platform really takes, a profile that wins work, PSEB registration, and the scams to walk away from in 2026.

The short answer

Pick one platform (Upwork or Fiverr) and one direct channel (your network, LinkedIn, or past clients). Build a profile around two or three strong case studies. Price so you know exactly what you keep after fees. Register with PSEB once money starts arriving. And never move a stranger's job off the platform before a contract exists.

This guide is about the freelancing itself. If you are still deciding whether freelancing is the right first step, read my guide on earning as a student. If your question is how the money reaches your bank, read how to get paid from abroad.

I ran my own studio, sxtudios, doing product design and brand work for early-stage clients. I believe products start with the problem, not the design, and freelance work is no different: clients pay for a solved problem.

Is freelancing worth it in Pakistan right now?

The demand is real. According to State Bank of Pakistan data reported by Profit, Pakistani freelancers earned a record US$1.76 billion in FY2025-26, up from US$984 million the year before. IT freelancers accounted for more than US$1.16 billion of that.

Different outlets quote different totals, depending on the period and on whether non-IT work is counted. The Express Tribune, also citing SBP data, reported that IT freelancers earned more than US$1.06 billion in July to May of the same year. Treat all of these as reported figures, not a promise about your income.

What the numbers do tell you: clients abroad already hire from Pakistan at scale. Your job is to be the easy choice among the people they already consider.

Platform or direct clients?

Platforms bring you clients and payment protection. In return they take a cut and set the rules. Here is what the two big ones say on their own pages in 2026:

UpworkFiverr
What you payA service fee of 0% to 15% per contract, shown before you acceptYou keep 80% of each completed order
Cost to pitchProposals use Connects, which cost US$0.15 eachNo fee to list a Gig
Payment protectionHourly work tracked in the desktop app, fixed-price work through funded milestonesEarnings clear 14 days after an order completes (7 days for Top Rated Sellers)
How work startsYou send proposals to job postsBuyers find your Gigs and order

Upwork suits designers who can write a sharp proposal for a specific problem. Fiverr suits work you can package with a clear scope, like a landing page or an app icon set.

Direct clients (friends of friends, LinkedIn, past employers) mean no platform fee. They also mean no payment protection, so you need a written scope and an upfront deposit. Upwork charges a reduced fee on Direct Contracts, if you want its payment system for a client you found yourself.

One rule to respect: Fiverr's terms forbid moving a buyer's payments off Fiverr. Breaking that rule can get your account disabled.

A profile that wins work

  • Lead with a specialty, not a list. "I design onboarding flows for SaaS apps" beats "UI/UX, logos, video, social media."
  • Show two or three case studies, not twenty shots. Each one needs the problem, your role, the process, and the result. My case study guide walks through the structure.
  • Match your proof to your pitch. If you sell mobile app design, your first case study should be a mobile app.
  • Verify your identity early. Upwork may ask for a government ID, and your profile country should match the country on that ID.
  • Write every proposal for one client. Name their problem in the first line. Generic proposals waste Connects.

Your first review matters more than your first rate. A small job done very well is the fastest way to stop being a profile with zero history.

Pricing honestly

I am not going to give you a "correct" rate. I could not find a trustworthy survey of what Pakistani designers charge, and invented numbers do more harm than none.

What you can do is price with your eyes open:

  1. Work backwards from what you want to keep. On Fiverr you keep 80%, so a price has to cover a 20% cut. On Upwork, check the fee shown on that specific contract before you send the proposal.
  2. Add the cost of getting paid. Withdrawal and conversion fees come on top. My getting paid from abroad guide covers them.
  3. Look at what similar profiles charge in your specialty, then position yourself on proof, not on being cheapest.
  4. Prefer fixed prices with a clear scope. Hourly billing punishes you for getting faster.

Raise your price after every few good reviews. The cheapest profile attracts the clients who are hardest to please.

Register with PSEB

The Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) registers individual freelancers, not just companies. You apply online through its portal at techdestination.com.

According to PSEB's own freelancer page:

  • Documents: personal NTN (with no business name), both sides of your CNIC, and a personal bank account letter or certificate.
  • Fee: Rs. 1,000 a year for a new registration, and Rs. 2,000 a year to renew. You pay through the portal's payment gateway or by pay order or demand draft.
  • Process: sign up, submit the form for initial approval, then pay and submit for final approval. PSEB says the certificate usually takes 2 to 5 working days after payment is verified.
  • Renewal asks for a summary of export revenue with SBP's IT codes and your income tax return.

What PSEB does not spell out is the exact freelancer benefit. Its membership page describes the 0.25% tax on export proceeds in terms of registered companies. So confirm with the FBR or a tax accountant how registration affects your own tax before you rely on it.

Avoiding scams

Upwork's own safety page lists the red flags. They apply on every platform and in your DMs:

  • Pay that looks too good, attached to a vague job description.
  • Pressure to move off-platform (WhatsApp, Telegram, email) before a contract starts.
  • Free "test" work that is really the project.
  • Payment outside the platform, which also removes your payment protection.

Two habits protect you most. On fixed-price work, do not start until the milestone is funded. And never pay anyone for access to a job, buy a ready-made account, or rent out your identity. If it needs secrecy, walk away.

Your next steps

  1. Choose one platform and one specialty, and write a one-line headline for it today.
  2. Turn two past projects into short case studies with a problem, your role, and a result.
  3. Send five proposals written for five specific clients, and note which ones get replies.
  4. Gather your NTN, CNIC, and bank letter so PSEB registration takes an afternoon when your first payment lands.
