The short answer

Apply a semester earlier than feels natural, and do not wait for a programme to be announced.

Only a few Pakistani companies publish a formal internship programme with dates. Most internships, especially in design, come from company career pages, LinkedIn, and a direct message with your work attached. So use both routes: apply to the structured programmes below on time, and reach out to companies directly in between.

The October 2026 round of 10Pearls SHINE takes applications from 11 to 19 October 2026.

Programmes you can actually apply to

I only list programmes I could confirm on an official page. Dates are for the 2026 cycle.

A few details worth knowing:

  • SHINE's 2026 tracks are Software Development, Quality Assurance, and Data Science. There is no design track. 10Pearls says SHINE is free to take part in.
  • Outreachy is not only for coders. Its projects can include user experience, documentation, and graphic design.
  • Outreachy students must have 42 consecutive days free from classes and exams during the internship. Pakistan is in the Northern Hemisphere, so you apply to the May to August cohort. In 2026, initial applications for that cohort ran from 6 to 13 February.
  • Devsinc Future Sync needs a completed degree, so it is for the summer after you graduate, not during your studies.

When to apply

The pattern from the programmes above: applications close months before the work starts.

  • February: Outreachy initial applications for the May cohort.
  • March: Google Summer of Code contributor applications. Accepted organisations were announced on 19 February 2026, so you can study their projects before applying.
  • October: 10Pearls SHINE, for 6th semester and up.

For companies without a published programme, I could not find reliable data on when Pakistani companies hire interns. So do not wait for a season. Start reaching out one semester before you want to start, and keep going.

Remote internships from Pakistan

Three of the programmes above are remote: SHINE, Google Summer of Code, and Outreachy. The last two put you on real open source projects with mentors abroad, which reads well on a CV for local and foreign jobs alike.

Remote work as a student is real. In my second year of university, I worked remotely as a UX designer for easytect, a software company in Germany, from Islamabad, while attending classes. That job taught me that nobody asked where I lived. They asked what I could do and whether I communicated clearly.

Be careful with remote "internships" that are just unpaid client work with no mentor. If nobody is teaching you and you are doing a paid employee's job, it is not an internship. My remote job guide for Pakistan covers paid remote roles once you are ready.

If you want a design internship

Design internships are rarely advertised as programmes. None of the structured programmes above has a design track, apart from Outreachy projects that include UX or graphic design.

What works instead:

  • Get experience before the internship. I joined ACM as a graphic designer in my first year, and my first paid design job was a basic graphic design role at PKR 15,000 a month. Small roles like these are how you get a portfolio worth an internship.
  • Target product companies, not only agencies. Look at apps you use and check who builds them.
  • Send work, not a CV. Redesign one screen of their product, explain why in a few lines, and send it to a designer on their team.

My portfolio guide and case study guide help you build the thing you send.

Finding the internships nobody advertises

  1. Make a list of 20 companies you would like to work at. Software houses, product startups, and companies whose apps you use.
  2. Check each careers page and follow the company on LinkedIn.
  3. Set LinkedIn job alerts for "intern" plus your city, and one for remote.
  4. Use your university. Career offices, job fairs, and societies like ACM bring companies to campus.
  5. Message one person per company, ideally an engineer or designer, not HR. One short message: who you are, one thing you built, and a specific question.

My networking guide covers how to write that message so people reply.

Your next steps

  1. 6th semester or above? Check the 10Pearls SHINE page for the current round. The October 2026 round closes on 19 October.
  2. Put February and March in your calendar for Outreachy and Google Summer of Code, and pick one open source project to start contributing to now.
  3. Write your list of 20 companies this week and find one person to message at each.
  4. Finish one project you can show, code or design, before you send a single application.
